A Brief History of Advent Calendars
Advent is actually a tradition that predates Advent calendars by around 15 centuries! In the 4th century, the period of Advent was celebrated starting on the Sunday nearest to the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle (November 30th) through the next three Sundays. The celebration anticipated the day of baptism for newly converted Christians, with no relation to Christmas. Between the 4th and 19th centuries, Advent was merged with the tradition of counting down the days in December to Christmas either with 24 candles or by making chalk marks on doors.
Chocolate doesn’t come into play until the mid-20th century in Germany. The Advent calendar originated early, around the turn of the 19th century, but if it included the characteristic doors at all, they revealed either a holiday-themed illustration or a Bible verse. Chocolate Advent calendars came about after World War II rationing ended and became the mainstay of Advent calendars in the US and Europe.
