Sweets 101: Get to Know Our Nama Chocolate “Au Lait”

ROYCE' Chocolate - Nama Chocolate "Au Lait" - Image shows brown blocks of chocolate on a blue plate with a silver spoon.

When the words “ROYCE’ Chocolate” are uttered, a confection that easily comes to mind is our signature Nama Chocolate “Au Lait”. This ROYCE’ Chocolate bestseller has endeared the palates of many people, thanks to its silky, creamy texture that melts in your mouth. For this blog post, we share some fun trivia related to this well-loved classic.

It’s Not The First Chocolate We Made

Contrary to what some may presume, the Nama Chocolate “Au Lait” is not the first chocolate we made even if that is the selection we are best associated with. ROYCE’ Chocolate was founded in 1983 in Hokkaido, Japan and our Chocolate Bar “Milk” is one of the first products we made back in 1985 followed by our Pure Chocolates in 1990. Our Nama Chocolates would come into the picture in 1995.

Why Is Nama Chocolate Smoothly Soft?

All of our Nama Chocolates are made with an abundant amount of Hokkaido fresh cream, which is responsible for their velvety and creamy texture. For the Nama Chocolate “Au Lait”, a hint of cherry and orange liqueurs add richness and depth to its flavor profile.

Why Is It Called Nama Chocolate “Au Lait”?

“Au Lait” means “With Milk” in French. Quite often, customers ask us if it’s a coffee-based flavor as they think of Cafe Au Lait. It’s not coffee-based but rather, the name Nama Chocolate “Au Lait” is meant to articulate the gentle sweetness of this confection’s milk-filled taste.

It’s An Award-Winning Confection, Literally

In 2013, a Japanese TV program held a competition on the best souvenir in Japan. Our Nama Chocolate “Au Lait” got the top award as the No. 1 Omiyage (souvenir goods that can also be in the form of regional sweets and food). Up to this day, our Nama Chocolate “Au Lait” continues to win the palates of gourmands and chocolate enthusiasts.

Words are good, but at ROYCE’ Chocolate, we believe that to taste is to believe. Hence, the best way to prove how delicious our Nama Chocolate “Au Lait” can be would be to eat it. Our Nama Chocolate “Au Lait” is available in the US at all of our boutiques and is also available for online shipping for the continental US through https://roycechocolate.com/.
